Voicing concerns about a medical professional

A leading professor of cancer medicine and oncology based in London has been found guilty by a Medical Practitioners’ Tribunal Service of providing patients with inappropriate treatment. Prof Justin Stebbing has had conditions placed on his registration with the GMC, with a decision on his fitness to practice pending, following the lengthy investigation into inappropriate treatment provided to 12 terminally-ill cancer patients despite their poor prognosis and, on occasion, clinical deterioration.

Anyone is able to raise concerns about a medical professional’s conduct and/or fitness to practice with the relevant regulatory body e.g. The General Medical Council for doctors, the General Dental Council for dentists etc.

There are occasions where our clients wish to report a medical professional to the relevant regulatory body. This is entirely a personal choice for each individual but not all instances of clinical negligence will necessarily warrant an investigation. However, where investigations are undertaken and they result in damning decisions against medical professionals there will most likely be grounds for a legal claim.

It remains to be seen whether the news will travel, whether more families come forward following the decision against Prof Stebbing and what effect this will have amongst the community of oncologists in the UK.

If you think a loved one may have been affected by these events and would like to discuss this with a member of our clinical negligence team please call us or complete an online enquiry form.
