Fracturas vertebrales tras la interrupción del tratamiento de inyecciones de denosumab
Stephanie Prior fue instruida en una reclamación contra el NHS Trust de Mid and South Essex, donde nuestra clienta sufrió varias fracturas vertebrales tras interrumpir el tratamiento de inyecciones de denosumab.
Nuestra clienta fue diagnosticada con osteoporosis en noviembre del 2011. Un estudio DEXA en octubre del 2013 confirmó el diagnóstico de osteoporosis en la columna vertebral y osteopenia en la cadera. Después, en noviembre del 2013, recibió inyecciones de Prolia para tratar la osteoporosis y, en mayo del 2014, de denosumab.
Nuestra clienta fue diagnosticada con artritis reumatoide en octubre del 2016. En septiembre del 2017, tuvo un brote fuerte de artritis reumatoide y estuvo en cama durante 3 días y sin trabajar durante 2 semanas. A partir de entonces, el Dr. Emese Balogh, reumatólogo en el Broomfield Hospital, la veía regularmente y le hizo muchos estudios DEXA y FRAX. Continuó recibiendo inyecciones de denosumab en la consulta de su médico de familia cada 6 meses.
El 19 de marzo del 2019, fue a la consulta del Dr. Emese Balogh, que decidió interrumpir el tratamiento, cosa que iba en contra de las directrices del NICE. Estas señalan que cualquiera que reciba denosumab debe continuar el tratamiento de por vida con seguimientos y controles periódicos. No se recomienda en ninguna parte interrumpir el tratamiento de denosumab.
Debido a esta decisión, nuestra clienta sufrió múltiples fracturas por fragilidad en las vértebras T12, L1, L2, L3 y L4. Las fracturas fueron diagnosticadas por primera vez 10 meses después de la interrupción del denosumab. Ahora, nuestra clienta está bajo el cuidado del Dr. Ken Poole, reumatólogo y especialista del metabolismo óseo. El Dr. Poole piensa que es muy probable que la fecha de la primera fractura sea el 10 de octubre del 2019, cuando nuestra clienta levantó pesos y flexionó la espalda como parte de sus tareas de auxiliar de la clase de ciencias en un colegio. También opina que nuestra clienta sufrió fracturas vertebrales por el efecto rebote tras la retirada del denosumab.
Nuestra clienta acabó con cambios irreversibles en las cinco vértebras, desde la T12 a la L4. Las fracturas han causado cambios considerables en la mecánica y la postura de su espalda. Ha perdido altura y la curvatura común de la columna vertebral, las vértebras torácicas y lumbares están demasiado rectas y restringen el movimiento. También han reducido su estabilidad y ha tenido numerosas caídas desde el incidente, por lo que ha tenido que tomarse unos días libres en el trabajo.
Todo esto ha afectado a su vida. Nuestra clienta trabaja como técnica de ciencias en un instituto. Puede continuar trabajando, pero ha tenido que modificar su puesto. Aunque nuestra clienta sigue siendo independiente, necesita ayuda con las tareas del hogar, sobre todo en la cocina. No puede trabajar en el jardín, que era su pasatiempo principal y lo disfrutaba mucho, lo que ha tenido un gran impacto en su salud mental.
Stephanie Prior consiguió llegar a un acuerdo extrajudicial por una cantidad de 6 cifras sin tener que iniciar procedimientos judiciales, ya que la parte contraria admitió responsabilidad al recibir la carta de demanda
